Kuncai Technology and Terre des Hommes Join Forces to Combat Child Labor in the Mica Supply Chain

2020.11.05

Kuncai has been focusing on the control work of mica supply chain, adopting a zero-tolerance policy for possible child labor in the mica supply chain, and regards the use of child labor as a serious crime, and resolutely does not allow child labor in any part of the production process. As a responsible global corporate, Kuncai's goal does not stop there, and in January 2016, Kuncai contacted Terre des Hommes, an international child rights organization based in the Netherlands, with the hope of working together to eliminate child labor in the mica supply chain. Kuncai's proposal was quickly recognized by Terre des Hommes, and the two parties immediately began discussions on a specific project. Kuncai invested a lot of time and energy into how to improve the supply chain, how to control the supply chain and how to audit the supply chain.

In March 2016, Terre des Hommes and Kuncai jointly launched "The Beauty and the Price" project, which will last for three years (2016-2019), with the fundamental aim of eliminating child labor in the mica supply chain, caring for the health of minors, and providing better educational conditions for school-age children. The project's milestone is to gradually eliminate child labor in the mica resource areas of Jharkhand state in India, and the ultimate goal of the project is to save 100 million children from child labor in Kodama and Kiridhi districts of Jharkhand. To contribute to the project, Kuncai and QolorTech, a partner of Kuncai Europe, will donate €500,000 and €100,000 respectively, which covers about 10% of the total budget of the project, and will be used for building child-friendly villages, assisting economically disadvantaged families, guaranteeing the standard of living of disadvantaged families and their family incomes, enabling children to get education and improving the employment of disadvantaged families through vocational skills training, and providing them with the necessary skills for their families. Through vocational skills training, the project will improve the employability of the poor families and create job opportunities for them. At the same time, Kuncai will be the ambassador of the "The Beauty and the Price" program, and work with Terre des Hommes to promote the success of the program.

In September 2016, Kuncai India was established, through which Kuncai will purchase mica directly from mines and process mica in its own processing plant. With the establishment of Kuncai India, Kuncai will strengthen the mica supply chain control work in India, and engage the globally authoritative independent third-party verification agency Bureau Veritas as the company's long-term auditor, and join Terre des Hommes as well as the Indian BBA and other NGOs to participate in the annual routine audit of mica supply chain control to improve the quality of mica supply chain audit work.

It is the responsibility of society as a whole to advocate for children's rights to physical development, nutrition and education. Eliminating child labor in the mica supply chain requires not only a structural and holistic analysis of the entire mica supply chain, but also the attention and participation of all members of society, including child protection organizations, communities, governments, civic organizations, the law, and private companies. Kuncai, as a partner of "The Beauty and the Price" project, calls for more members of the society to join us and work together to solve the problem of child labor. Although our individual power is limited, we hope to change the world in our own way. We firmly believe that we can achieve our common goal of eliminating child labor in the mica supply chain.
